I dunno, this looks like
Pete "Hollow Leg" Smith to me. Him & Johnson were running buddies. Legend says that Smith was the better of the two, but there are no recordings of Smith so we can't tell. Pictures like this one pop up from time to time and it's always Smith. He was the more photographed of the two, by far. He loved the camera, whereas Johnson was shy. I have a recording of Son House doing his "She Came From The Devil's Ass" and it's pretty chilling stuff.
ah...Pete. i'm sure i have a wire recording of him doing "My Baby Likes Love Butter With Her Tea"...tho it's in G flat, indicating that it might really be Johnson. have scheduled a research day at The Smithsonian next month - will post the results.
