In 1976, when I was studying composition at Akron University, a fellow student (you know him – L.S.) and I collaborated on a concept piece where we gathered an audience and performed no music but instead recorded the ambient sounds (coughs and clicks among other things).
It was really quite boring and didn’t go over very well at all to say the least. And we certainly weren’t offered a recording contract by Deutsche Grammophon.
I still have it on a ¼” 4-track tape stored somewhere in the basement but have no plans to pull it out and convert to digital only so that I could say “F.U. suckers! I did this thirty years ago!” But I DID!
